Cypress Island technically isn't a San Juan Island because it is located within Skagit County, however, this topographically diverse island is often lumped into the San Juan Island archipeligo.
The majority of the island is owned and Managed as public land by the Washington Department of Natural Resources. The small waterfront community at Strawberry Bay hosts the majority of the island's residents.
The east side of the island has DNR mooring buoys and is a popular destination for boaters and kayakers during the warmer months. Freshwater lakes in the center of the island offer a wonderful destination for hikers.
Travel to the island is by private boat only and two water taxi companies travel often from Skyline Marina on Fidalgo Island. A direct trip is typically only a 15 minute boat ride from Anacortes.
Homes on Cypress Island are totally "off the grid" and residents primarily use propane and solar panels for power. The Strawberry Bay community has a developed water system but the property owners in other areas of the island have private wells.
